Act V, Scene 1

A courtroom. The judges wear Ku Klux Klan robes.

1ST JUSTICE.: Bring forth the party of suspicion.

ACCUSED: What is my offense?
Where is the evidence against me?
What lawful inquest have given their verdict up
Unto the frowning judge?
Who pronounced the bitter sentence
Before I be convict by course of law?
I am a subject, and I challenge law:
Attorneys are denied me.
I lay my claim to my inheritance
Of free descent.

1ST JUST.: What we will do,
We do upon command.

2ND JUST.: And he that commanded is our King.

1ST JUST.: We must not make a scarecrow of the law,
And let it keep one shape, till custom make it
A perch and not a terror.

2ND JUST.: Nor need we have to do with any scruple:
Our scope is to enforce or qualify such laws
As to us seems good.
