Macbush

Act V, Scene 6

Enter Rumour.

RUMOUR: Open your ears,
For which of you will stop
The vent of hearing when loud Rumour speaks?
Upon my tongue continual slanders ride,
The which in every language I pronounce,
Stuffing the ears of men with false reports.
It is an excellent foppery of the world,
That when we are sick in fortune,
Often the surfeit of our own behaviour,
We make guilt of our disasters
The sun, the moon and the stars:
As if we were villains by necessity;
Fools by heavenly compulsion,
Knaves, thieves and treachers,
By spherical predominance;
Drunkards, liars and adulterers
By obedience of planetary influence:
An admirable evasion
To lay your disposition to the charge of a star!

Pointing to Macbush.

RUMOUR: See, see Macbush! Doth appear
As the discontented sun from out the east
When he perceives envious clouds are bent
To dim his glory. For all the country, in a general voice,
Cried hate upon him.
Their prayers and love were set on Dean McClark
Whom they doted on, more than the King.
